I have travelled all my life and every place where I have lived and worked has changed me into a better person and a better creative (artist/writer/actor). But one instance of transformation stands out. I was in Asmara, Eritrea not as a tourist, but living and working there. I was only 20. I had made a date with a woman and went to meet her at her house in a compound. I sat by the communal well and after a while fell asleep waiting (she never did show up). At around 2 am I awoke to a man shaking me by the shoulders. We didn't share any of the languages spoken there, but he gestured that I was getting cold and I could come to his house and sleep. He gave me a spot next to his bed that he shared with his wife. He moved the coals so that I shared their meager heat. I quickly fell asleep on the mat they had put down for me. In the morning, I awoke to the feeling that someone was staring at me. Under the bed were two children who had given up their mat for me and were sleeping on the bare dirt floor. I will never forget that kindness. I had never experienced anything like that growing up in the US and Canada. Since then I have returned that kindness to others on several occasions. Each time was a reward in itself. Travel has made me a better person.
